I wanted to share a quick and easy way to enjoy a holiday activity that is family friendly and affordable! Instead of making actual gingerbread houses, which is hard to do and time consuming. I thought of an alternative way to create a family friendly and cost effective holiday activity!
Each year around Christmas I decorate gingerbread houses with my nephews, who are now 5 and 7! Normally I just buy a couple of the pre-made kits. But not this year! For the last couple years the boys figured out that the candy wasn’t as good as regular candy...and as you know those darn kits aren’t really all that great anyway. So I told them that this year would be different and I would get us our own supplies!
I made 4 different style houses out of graham crackers for everyone who wanted to decorate! So essentially we had a little village and we all had fun decorating our own little house. We even had a decorating competition!
I start with a box of graham crackers and my trusty $3.00 glue gun from Hobby Lobby! Cut the graham crackers into the shapes you want for your little houses. Glue them as you go and let them dry. Do this the day before or at least an hour before the actual decorating, otherwise they won’t be dry.
I did four different house styles.
I also made some frosting but I don't like how it turned out. I would recommend using a frosting that holds it shape better, like a butercream frosting. That way you can use cake decorating tips which is a bit more fun!
I would also suggest, if you are going to use Ziploc bags as frosting bags, to get the good kind so the frosting doesn't ooze out from the top when someone is using it. Yes, that did happen to us!
So enjoy this very easy holiday activity with your family and friends!
